Built for life that doesn't slow down. The HIRO Performance belt gives you a fully adjustable, secure fit that moves with your body — whether that's a long workday, a workout, or a fluctuating waistline during recovery. Engineered with premium, breathable materials and reinforced stitching for daily wear, it's the belt you reach for when you need support you can trust. Horizontal style is meant for the ostomy bag to be worn sideways or diagonally away from your belly button.

Vertical vs. Horizontal: Which Should You Choose?

In my 17 years of living with an ostomy, I've discussed this with many doctors and surgeons and found there's no medical requirement to wear your belt in either direction — it comes down to your lifestyle and what feels best on your body. Waste will leave your stoma no matter what direction you wear your ostomy bag, so let's make it as comfortable as possible for you to wear normal clothes and enjoy life on your terms.

Vertical Horizontal
Best for Lower mobility, casual/evening wear Active lifestyles — sports, surfing, golf, driving
Common use case Standard default given at hospital discharge Preferred by active wearers once healed and settled in
Draining Waist opening sits at the bottom of the bag for easy draining Bag sits off to one side, out of the way
Bending over Can compress the bag against your waist, risking detachment Bag moves toward the hip, so bending doesn't compress it
Sleeping Harder to sleep on your stomach — bag gets pinned under your body Sits off to one side, so stomach and side sleeping stay comfortable
Clothing Can be trickier to tuck in shirts or wear a waist belt over Easier to tuck in and wear normally under a belt
Appliance longevity More pressure/friction during activity Tends to reduce wear on the appliance during movement

Not sure which is right for you? Try both. Many people start vertical after surgery and switch to horizontal as they return to a more active routine — and some simply prefer one over the other regardless of activity level.

A Note From Richard — Not Medical Advice, Just Personal Insight

To be clear, this isn't medical advice. It's based on my personal journey of over 17 years living with an ostomy, and on conversations with hundreds of thousands of customers along the way. I've had the privilege of being a guest speaker at UOAA support groups and ostomy educational conferences. As an avid martial arts instructor, surfer, and active parent, this reflects my own real-life insight — and my hope is that it helps you find what works best for you, so you can enjoy the best quality of life after your surgery too.
